SkyStream Acquires Data Broadcasting Company 9/30/99 In a move to strengthen its technology to deliver Web-based content via broadcast spectrum, SkyStream Corp. (Mountain View, CA) has acquired Varuna Software, an Ontario, Canada-based developer of server-client software. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Varuna?s products include the Jetstream Data Broadcasting System, which targets digital broadcasters, cable, satellite, and broadcast television stations who want to broadcast Web content and IP-based data over their existing spectrum. The software manages the collection, preparation, scheduling, and multi-point delivery of the content to ISPs and consumers.
The technology will complement SkyStream?s existing platform that uses unused space in the MPEG video bitstream to transmit Internet and IP data.
?Our acquisition of Varuna underscores our commitment to build an interoperable, networking architecture for broadcasters to add new data and Internet-based services to their network, which translates to increased revenue opportunities and expanded programming for their viewers,? said Jim Olsen, president and CEO of SkyStream.
Varuna?s founder and president Scott Dougall will join SkyStream as director of software products for the Jetstream technology.
