I have long understood the leftist totalitarianism that threatens America. The problem is, I do not think the GOP is a suitable antidote to it. Indeed I think the GOP is about as enslaved to the leftists as is the rest of America. America would continue drifting into socialism even were the GOP to command the Presidency and both houses of Congress. The GOP (and also the average American citizen) is locked into an essentially big government leftist paradigm. The GOP taxes and spends via the same leftist principle as Democrats. In many ways the GOP perpetuates the welfare state.

Folks love to criticise welfare recipients and grow angry with "welfare queens." But very many people (likely a majority of Americans) themselves receive government help in some form or another. A storm blows up somewhere and it becomes expected that the government will bail folk out of it. Welfare is ubiquitous in America, even daily stultifying welfare, and the GOP will do nothing to end it. GWB, if he becomes president (I think he will fail), will write welfare checks to the nation almost as freely as has Bill Clinton.

Folk are very much hooked on government welfare in this country, and as the classes continue to divide, this sort of thing will increase until true and overt socialism becomes the norm. National Healthcare did not fail because Americans are fundamentally against it on principle. It failed only because the current healthcare infrastructure helped Americans fear what Hitlery would do. But National Healthcare is on the way as surely as the sun rises. And as times get tougher, more socialism will be upon us.

Americans have lost their sense of individualism and self-sufficiency. They think someone owes them something, and they want their piece of the government pie, not understanding that with each nibble of that pie they lose themselves.

The GOP cannot stop this because the GOP is part of the problem. It will not ever present a challenge to socialism because it already accepts it in principle. The only thing that will stop socialism in America is Americans who relish the freedom that comes with being as independent of government as is possible. And as long as folk vote against something instead of for something, they will never be that sort of American.

(gotta run, a pleasure my friend)
