I do not mean to disparage your husband, but the book mentioned was relatively obscure, mostly known in certain emigre circles. There were some others who thought that it was possible to have a mellowing of the Soviet system, but there were not "many others" who foresaw the system being swept away...Have you ever read of Isaiah Berlin's distinction between the Hedgehog and the Fox? Reagan was a hedgehog, a man who knows one thing, that is, has a fairly simple and comprehensive vision, and a good deal of character to pursue it. Clinton is a fox, clever, sophisticated, and without discipline. Many times, the hedgehog makes history by leading, while the fox is "on staff". This is not to say that hedgehogs are always right, or that foxes always lack character, but...... |
