Rob, <So my guess is that Merced L2 does 4.2 GB/sec>

<Nope. Steve "Mr. Merced" Smith said in MPR 10/26/98 that the L2 cache bandwidth will be more than 10 GB/sec>

Okay.. then the MPR article doesn't make much sense .. why
would they be saying max memory bandwidth of 4.2 GB/sec?
Where's the bottleneck? So if L2 does > 10 Gig what good does that do when it can only be fed at 4.2? What
makes more sense is 21264 L2 max is 5.2 GB/sec and lo and behold latest cross-bars feed memory at 5.2 GB/sec.

Let me guess.. on-chip switch for Merced? Makes sense.
We'll see how it stacks up against 21364 with its on-chip
switches.

Tell us more next week?

<I'll be there at Microprocessor Forum. It's not only next month, but also next week. I'm sure we'll know a little more
about Merced by then. Maybe not performance, because it still way too early, but I'm sure we'll learn about
transistor count, which I already know by the way.>

Okay.. but the saw: "still too early for performance" doesn't cut it at all. Simulations allowed Digital to
propose 30 SpecInt95 and 50 fp for 21264 in 1996 and they came
very close to those numbers 2 years later.. not FRS because of slower
older system busses .. since hit 39 int and 65 fp with
faster subsystems and 700 MHz 21264. Likewise, 21364
supposedly tapes in December and Compaq is estimating
70+ SpecInt95 and 120+ SpecFp95. Nice to hear that
Merced will have some competition.

Why can't Intel pin down accurate performance numbers given
very good simulators? Not uncommon practice these days.

Another fellow mentioned 27 million transistors for Merced.

<I see more doom-n-gloom news reports concerning Alpha than positive.>

Yeah. I see them too at www.news.com (Intel is a sponsor)
and from www.intelprocessorsupport.com aka the folks that
bring us MPR. Talk about silly.. look at the passing
reference to EV8 in this article:

news.cnet.com

Doesn't even get EV8 timeframe correct. Intel spends a third year in a row talking about Merced , Compaq tells us
about EV8 having done EV7 last year. What a contrast.
