my take is that DSL is a dedicated phone line with separate cost, broadband speed

Since no one commented on this, I'll correct -

DSL typically 'piggybacks' on an existing phone line; some simple low-pass filters are wired into the telco box or just stuck on each phone so they don't 'see' the DSL signals. No dedicated pair of copper, always connected 24x7. (I used my existing fax line.) There is a separate fee in addition to the basic phone line charge itself, but here in US West territory it's only 29.95/month for dedicated 256kbit/second (=5X a 56k modem) service, or 24.95/month if you're willing to have 'Lite' DSL service that involves a initial 1-2 second connection/login phase every so often.

As someone else said here, I'd be utterly lost without DSL. And unlike cable, I'm *not* forced into having @home (=T) as my ISP - I can choose from among at least 20 in this area alone. USWest just supplies the pipe and it doesn't matter to them whether they or someone else are paid to do the rest.
