I don't say he was nothing! I say that, as the researches of Edmund Morris seem to demonstrate, what he was was something like a sincere, charismatic and goal-oriented goofball, characterized by "enclycopedic ignorance" and with an inability to distinguish between reality and fantasy, who was operated like a puppet by skillful handlers.
