A few thoughts on this:
1) There were government specs in Lockheed's hands that would have
spelled out the measurements. Perhaps, since I left in '93, Lockheed
can no longer read? Perhaps, since the 80% funding cuts in the last
10 years, Lockheed is now using janitors?
2) If you were JPL and somebody gave you figures that were in miles
instead of the feet you were expecting, wouldn't you notice?

Moonray, is this JPL just trying to spread the blame?

Hundreds of thousands of space/defense workers with 10 years or more
experience have been lost due to government cutbacks over the last
decade. These people were shown the door with NO mistakes.

It did not take any $125 million mistake to get shown the door
where I used to work.

There goes the media, concentrating on the one negative instead of
the positive, again!<g>

The mistake was particularly embarrassing because the spacecraft
had successfully flown 416 million miles over 9 1/2 months before
its disappearance Sept. 23 just as it was about to go into orbit
around the Red Planet.
