Yogi, Some commentary on the HP-Qwest storage venture: Message 11409398
I suppose I have a negative reaction to this because I remember the late 80s when I worked for a company that rented space on a mainframe for several years. Sure, it worked most of the time, things went smoothly. But two or three times a year--of course at what seemed like the most critical times--something bad would happen, we either went down, or something wasn't run properly, or we needed a file and couldn't for some reason access it, whatever, and we had little recourse but to scream at someone and twiddle our thumbs waiting. I realize that these things happen with in-house networks too, but it at least feels like you have more control when it's in-house (yes, I know, there were and still are many, many heated discussions about that issue!).
I also wonder about security. Yeah, sure, it'll be secure most of the time, but who is really really guaranteeing it? If it isn't in your control, you have to wonder.
The company I worked for eventually got their own network up and running, and trashed the third party service. |
