>>>ADSL Vs. SDSL (CSCO entering market ?)

Hi Nirmal,

I don't think we need to worry about SDSL, nor do we have to worry about CSCO entering this space. I spent a great deal of time talking to Cisco yesterday. They have no plans to enter the ADSL business directly. Cisco will focus on providing 'enabling technology' for all the high bandwidth solutions (ADSL, Cable Modem etc.).

However, I am surprised to see no reaction to Dee Jay's posts all over these Amati boards yesterday. As he stated and I can confirm, Ascend is entering this market. I think that's the news we have to consider.
Ascend is going to have ADSL & HDSL products by year end. They are currently planning to go with DMT and not CAP!!! Mory thinks Cable Modems are kludgy & ADSL will win the bandwidth battle hands down. He thinks the modems will be priced around $500 to start with & the phone companies will bundle them with the service. He also stated that the installation of ADSL would be a lot easier than that for ISDN (he should know, Ascend owns more than 80% of the ISDN market). He said the infrastructure would be the same for ADSL as it is for ISDN (from RBOCs perspective). Ascend does not plan to acquire any ADSL companies to get into the business. They are doing it all inhouse.

Based on the above, I personally think Amati doesn't have to worry much about Westell or Paradyne, but they should be worrying about Ascend.

I would like to hear everyone's comments on this. I think we all expected to see Ascend enter this space, so not much of a surprise there. What surprised me is the fact that Mory said they would be using the DMT chipset from Alcatel. I wasn't aware of the fact that Alcatel had a DMT chipset. As he was in a hurry to catch his flight, I couldn't follow up on this point. Can someone clarify this for us?
