Sidney - the fact that they are still capable of a nuke adventure (or assisting someone else in theirs) was the basis of my original remarks.

If you don't know what I mean by deservedly paranoid, check the casualty stats for WWII. There's more to that story and a couple of others. Russia should praise God for creating winter.

Although Russia could have really ****ed up the earth, they didn't have a prayer of beating the west militarily. The communist idea will always be with us. In its pure form, its a beautiful idea -- in reality it's a major mess.

Communism, IMO, retarded, but did not waste a once vibrant and rich country. Russia's wealth and splendor, while magnificent, did not run very deep under any form of rule. No doubt I have overstated this and will defer in advance to Joan's take, should she offer one.

Russia's espionage success was largely dependent on traitors. The brainy and the discontented. And, the criminally naive. Their in-house intel capability was a lot like their military -- BRUTE FORCE, BABY! Agents abroad were about as subtle as Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd as the Festrunck brothers.

Nukes or no nukes, I suspect Russia will have a prominent role on world stage for quite a while yet.
