STII was a company I fell in LOVE with about five years ago when they first were released by DARPA to pursue commercial markets. They developed and still sell TDMA, CDMA and other advanced technologies that were developed for "Desert Storm" type communications systems for the military, etc. They are also very active in Glogal Positioning System product and service markets. They are the smaller step brother to QCOM which has somewhat similar background. Darpa now lets these guys exploit the communications technologies and patents they have developed. QCOM has a great portfolio of patents that are essential for CDMA deployment in cellular and PCS applications. I don't know the particulars, but Stanford has told me that they have a large number of patents that cover CDMA, TDMA and other technologies but that QCOM can prevent them from competing directly in a good portion of the cellular & PCS markets.

They have developed very highly integrated design capabilties and have several advanced chips or chip sets for spread spectrum (CDMA) type transmission over wireless, cable, or fiber optic media. STII has a major agreement with HP to implement cable modems. This relationship has followed announcements of new management that have spurred the stock price.

Summary; An excellently positioned company with good management and technology to ride the wave of infra-structure deployment for wireless and cable communications markets. Problems? Dealing with the rapid growth same as with all the players in the field.
