Personal income increased $39.1 billion, or 0.5 percent, and disposable personal income (DPI) increased $46.2 billion, or 0.7 percent, in August, according to the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $54.4 billion, or 0.9 percent. In July, personal income increased $16.8 billion, or 0.2 percent, DPI increased $8.5 billion, or 0.1 percent, and PCE increased $22.0 billion, or 0.4 percent, based on revised estimates.

NAPM's Price Index gained 7.8 percentage points to 67.6, rising above the 50 mark for the fifth consecutive month. The index indicates higher prices paid by manufacturers during September when compared to August, and the highest the index has been since May 1995.

Construction put in place during August 1999 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $692.0 billion, nearly the same (+/-5 percent) as the revised July estimate of $694.8 billion, according to the U.S. Commerce Department's Census Bureau.
The August figure represents a 3(+/-5) percent increase over August 1998.
