You'll need a CODEC if you want to have an advanced, cutting edge device that will be sold in retail stores. It's a "no brainer" that time-shifting and interactive voice, video, and data capabilities are converging quickly in to an all-in-one "information appliance" or STB. Yes? IMO, a working CODEC is a must.
