Good post Paul. As usual you hit the nail right on the head. This is part of the next phase - Schmidt has turned Novell around now it's time for growth. For each phase you need different resources, different talents/skills.

When you join up a major sports league you buy a franchise - you populate that team with the best possible players to make yourself competetive. After some time, you gain some strength, develop some new players and begin to grow.

When you buy an old team, you keep things the same and begin a turn-around. Part of that process is to assess what you have, see where you stand and begin to map a plan to become more competetive. Many new managers/coaches have "5 year" plans - so this would place us in Year 2 (or 3?) of Schmidt's Era.

If we keep the sports analogy going, some teams develop differently - through their farm system, thru free agency some even use both tracks to improve their chances. I'd like to see Novell work their farm system. Get some new blood going - new products, new thoughts, new visions.

Then perhaps they could change their marketing plan as well :)

I'm looking forward to Tuesday but I don't expect to see $30 by Wednesday afternoon. I would like to see us move up past $21 or even $22 on the announcement alone but hey, I'm an optimist right :)
