(COMTEX) B: UK LINX Internet Peering Point Hits 1Gbps 09/30/99 B: UK LINX Internet Peering Point Hits 1Gbps 09/30/99 LONDON, ENGLAND, 1999 SEP 30 (Newsbytes) -- By Sylvia Dennis, Newsbytes. The London InterNet eXchange (LINX) has announced that its Internet peering point, handling traffic between, to, and from, UK Internet service providers (ISPs), has hit one gigabit per second (Gbps) for the first time. The bandwidth milestone, the not-for-profit firm says, means that LINX is now in the top five of Internet exchanges around the world. A year ago, LINX says, its traffic volume was peaking at 180 megabits- per-second (Mbps). This week's 1Gbps throughput is a 450 percent increase on that figure. Keith Mitchell, the firm's chairman, said that the 1Gbps throughput on LINX confirms the switching point's position of being number one in Europe as regards Internet exchange traffic. "We still have new members joining all the time," he said, adding that the throughput has been made possible by LINX's move to a Gigabit Ethernet architecture last year. "It's been a busy year and we have had to move swiftly at LINX to employ more staff and to find larger premises to ensure the company can continue to grow and develop," he said. Mitchell added that, during the past year, LINX has taken on 32 new members, a mixture of Internet service providers and telcos, and several more will be announced before the end of this year.
