Tomato, [edited] there's FreeInet. I tried it and had some problems, [forgot which kind]. Alta Vista is the only one of the three that worked 'out of the box' for me. I use AV as a backup only. It was easy and problem-free to install.
Sign-on is a little slow.

Costco sells 3 months of MSN for $36, renewable in
3 month increments for $36. MSN is not bad.
