some of the illiterates who vote for Congress party may indeed be making a wise choice?

Please don't mix wisdom with a political choice based on garbled misinformation.

Let me narrate my experience in this summer's visit to Badrinath. I had requested a close Brahmin friend to select a good car with a driver from Delhi/Meerut and he had chosen a Muslim. My first tryst with the driver was on a day loaded with our luggage. I forgot to unload my camera bag with two VCRs worth about $2500 from the car. The driver brought the bag the next morning. We went to Badrinath and fetched the purest form of Ganga water, but the bottles as well as "prasads" were carried by our driver. I was so fond of the driver that I bought him a pure woolen shawl in addition to offering him some good tips as well as food on the way. I asked him his favorite party and he replied it was Congress. I asked him why he did not like BJP. He said the party has dangerous elements who hate Muslims. I asked him what he thought of Vajpayee's visit to a Muslim home to break the Ramadan fasting by a dinner with the Muslim household. He said that was good, but the BJP's advent had raised the price of electricity among other things and that the Congress was not so bad with these kinds of amenities. He was completely unaware of the Congress party's top level corruption (two prime ministers involved scandals) and the party in collusion with corrupt bureaucrats' throwing crumbs at the poor while amassing wealth through kickbacks that in the long-run kept the poor in the abyss.

In sum, my Muslim driver was illiterate, but he was wise, honest and intelligent enough to understand what mattered to him. But, he has been fed with a lot of misinformation. The Congress party has been concocting ways of spreading misinformation in the country side; while the country lost on bigger matters. For example, Indira G failed to force Pakistan to sign an agreement about accepting the LOC as the international boarder before handing over 90000 refugees; if she had the foresight, it would have saved Pakistan as well as India billions of dollars that could have uplifted the plight of the poor.
