Software firms fight charges of sabotage

Indian software firms in the US have dismissed the allegations made by U.S. officials that the country`s Y2K experts could be used to induce malicious code, saying they took extra care to avoid problems. Reacting to the allegations, deputy managing director of Infosys S.Gopalakrishnan said that the software companies take utmost care while recruiting software employees and will not allow such things to happen. He said that code sabotage is theoretically possible, but the fact that reputed Indian firms are engaged in the happening is very low.

Mr. Michael Vatis, a top cyber cop in the FBI had earlier reported that malicious code changes under the guise of Y2K modifications had begun to surface in some US work undertaken by foreign contractors. He also cited a CIA official saying that India and Israel were among most likely sources of malicious code.

Meanwhile, Rusi Brij, vice-president for corporate planning at Satyam Computer Services Ltd said code changes suggested by the U.S. officials required devious minds to execute and Indians have not been known for such capabilities
