I don't know how such a proposition could be tested. If you were looking for people responsible for boosting confidence in the market, I would think you'd start with the Federal Reserve guys and pom-pom boys of the financial media. The idea that the decline of '87 would have turned into a depression of the '29 - '33 sort is a speculation I haven't heard before. There were many differences in the two eras.
