In fact, I believe that US has grudgingly come to a conclusion that its best interest is to befriend India for political, economic and military reasons.

Well, if they have to use India to achieve their ends, sure they will, just as they used Pakistan as a launching pad to deal with the Soviets in Afghanistan. And in the process, they will extract big concessions from India -- acceptance of the LoC as international border and the signing of the CTBT being the most prominent ones.

As to what India will get in return, and also whether opposing forces within India itself will even allow these to happen, there are huge, huge question marks.
