The fund focuses on the "new economy" created by the revolution in technology, communications and commerce. It is not an Internet fund, but instead seeks to capitalize on broader trends and innovation reshaping society of which the Internet is certainly a part. Three strategic themes are "infogenesis" (e.g., G* and QCOM), "corporate tribalism" in a hypercompetitive global economy (e.g., Home Depot), and "innovation" (e.g., LU and AOL).

"The first is what he calls "infogenesis," which involves finding the best of the companies building the infrastructure for the information economy. Among Luskin's favorites in this area is Globalstar (GSTRF), which is constructing a low-earth orbit, satellite-based digital telecommunications system.
'Most human beings on the planet haven't even made a phone call. All that's going to change on a global scale,' said Luskin, who notes that the cost to connect new users in areas that are not already wired will be dramatically cheaper with the Globalstar technology than with conventional terrestrial lines.
Luskin also likes Qualcomm (QCOM), which he calls the 'Microsoft of the wireless age.' One reason is that the wireless communications company's CDMA technology which allows thousands of signals to be spread across the radio spectrum simultaneously, making greater use of limited bandwidth." |
