------------------------------------------------------------------------ TOKYO, JAPAN, 1997 APR 7 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams. The Panasonic Broadcast & Digital Systems Company (PBDSC) subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. [TOKYO:6752] [NYSE:MC] has announced four large contract wins to CBS Inc., ABC Inc., Time Warner Cable and Benedek Broadcasting. The announcements were made at the National Association of Broadcasters exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The contracts highlighted the growing move to digital editing systems at television stations. Among the contracts announced, CBS purchased more than 1,400 DVCPRO digital video recorders, valued at over $24 million, for its owned-and-operated (O&O) television stations. ABC Inc., in New York, has purchased eight Panasonic D-5 1/2-inch component digital video recorders for production of on-air graphics for network sports, news and promotions.
Time Warner Cable has also purchased DVCPRO equipment, worth $1.1-million, for its Bay News 9 cable news station in Tampa, Florida. The purchase was attributed to the successful use of the system by NY1-News in New York. The news operations at ten stations of the Benedek Broadcasting Corporation will also benefit from a $2-million contract to upgrade the systems to digital. |
