Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing.

Prices dropped more than the previous week during the last week. Four of the drives sampled went up in price, 90 remained the same and 54 declined in price. The average decline was $18. The drop made the decline over the past 4 weeks about average at 5.6%.

Prices for the quarter declined about the same as the decline in the year's first quarter. It was less than last quarter. However, since the prices started the quarter low, profits will likely be below those of the first quarter that started strong. There was no visible signs in pricing that the Christmas season has tightened up supply. However, 12 of the sampled drives became unavailable this week. Only one drive became unavailable the previous week.
