On high alert->'Shoot on sight', if anyone tries to disrupt the polling process.

As India enters the final phase of its general election, authorities have given police orders to shoot on sight anyone who tries to disrupt the polling process.

About 133 million Indians, mostly living in the north and east of the country, are eligible to vote on Sunday and officials are keen to discourage the violence and corruption that has marred previous polls.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and opposition Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi are amongst 1,080 candidates competing for the final 118 parliamentary seats up for grabs................

...The whole process takes in more than 800,000 polling stations and is estimated to cost the government around $1bn........
