I think you're being way too technical and reading way too much into the statement. All the author was trying to do was explain, in ten words or less, what a "put" is, to someone unfamiliar with the term. Calling them "the right to sell MSFT stock at a set price and time", while perhaps more technically correct, is IMHO a less useful explanation to a general audience.
