My objection to SCSL for Solaris rests on entirely different grounds than the objections of the slashdot religious flamers. They turn me off like all religious flamers do.

I don't think Sun's trying to fool or manipulate anyone. I think the problem is precisely the opposite: that they're fooling themselves if they think that this approach is going to get them a lot of free labor.

My anxiety on SCSL (for Solaris, not Java and Jini, where I think it's fine) is related to all the stories we're seeing about how Solaris is eating HP/UX's lunch. Solaris is a good product because it has been developed in a certain way by Sun over many years. Will SCSL entail a change for the better in how Solaris is developed? I claim nobody knows, and that Sun has to be careful in their approach, because it could just as easily entail a change for the worse.
