If I have to contact HP should I need to re-install the scanner, this could get pretty expensive. Any help will be appreciated.

I assume everything is working ok now? It may be a good time to back up your entire system. What types of changes did HP ask you to do? Were they in the device manager?

One backup option is Powerquest Drive Image. It makes a complete copy of your harddrive. It requires a second drive to backup to.

PowerQuest also has a new product..the name escapes me.. I believe it backs up configurations. It may be worth a look. Just looked it up..Second Chance powerquest.com

I have used Drive Image. I have not used Second Chance If it works as advertised it could be a useful tool.
