"What about the unlicenced spectrum?

Let me jump in here if you don't mind. A while back
Dr. Levy wrote that he saw difficulties ahead with the
greater use of the ISM channels, particularly when
used by commercial vendors. I can report that this
situation is already starting to occur here in Bend, OR
where we have two local suppliers wireless service on
the unlicensed spectrum, and already have inteference
between the two systems. The result is greatly
increased BER which totally stomps of the
bandwidth. What Adaptive Broadband's Scharre
proposes may have potential in the most remote of
regions (the co-op phone company up in the Texas
hill country comes to mind here), but in any dense
urban area, this overuse of the spectrum will only lead
to what has been dubbed "the tragedy of the
commons", by George Gilder
and many observers
going back over the centuries, to the time when
livestock were pastured on common land to the
detriment of all.
