It is not like they were offering them stock to lure their business in the first place, but in fact to keep it.

Gordon, same thing in my book. The offer is for future business, no difference than priceline.com giving away 18.6 million shares to Delta (worth about $3 billion at its peak soon after the IPO) to get Delta's future business.
