A wonderful example is McKinley praying all night about the Philippines. He decided to to keep them. Actually it was Elihu Root, attorney for the sugar trust, who told him to keep them. God and prayer had nothing to do with it. Made a good story, though. Just like that story about not knowing where the islands were until we had them, despite cables (still in Naval archives) specifically ordering Dewey's fleet to proceed to Hong Kong and prepare for offensive operations against the Spanish Pacific fleet. Never believe anything a President says.
