A full-color organic electroluminescent display from Kodak & Sanyo:

The thin profile should appeal to designers.

The panel has a simple structure, consisting of a 1-mm-thick glass substrate with an EL layer 150 nanometers thick and a metal cover. The prototype is 1.8 mm thick overall -- "thinner than a quarter coin," said Williams. In the future, plastic will be used for the substrate, he said.

They don't expect to achieve high-yield volume production of the active-matrix version until 2001. Still, this is rapid progress for a joint venture that was just established in February. The display is direct view, so it won't compete with CyberDisplay except for applications that can go either way.
