GST, At Merrill, analysts used to be required to clear their public comments ahead of time, especially if they were different from previous positions. In that case, the change in view would have to go through ML's distribution channel first.

In the past, Blodget has commented on the investment merits of stocks he does not follow (a ML no-no), commented on an upcoming IPO (a big no-no), and frequently made comments that went counter to his ratings, citing some (unknown to me) ML policy against flipping ratings based on short-term stock moves. I would doubt that mgmt is encouraging him to say these things, but then again I am still surprised that they allowed his official company description of AMZN to refer to it as "overvalued". Usually they go for "richly valued" and maybe even "fantastically expensive". <ggg>
