Vaccines- lesser evils
Any idea how many times a kid's immune system will be challenged with live virus, bacteria, fungi and parasites growing up? Throw in allergans too. Count up all the colds, stomach aches, allergies, rashes, fevers, cuts, scrapes, open sores, dental work and all the other normal kid malaise and EACH ONE is the same (or worse!)as a vaccine challenge.
So why would a vaccination "blast the immune system to smithereens?" Kid has an immune system (and damn good ones- much better than us geezers-) to deal with all this stuff, and "learn" what to watch for in life.
Early lesson form biostatistics: Co-incidence is NOT causality. A friend of the family who is a therapist for kids with learning and speech disorders once told us that there didn't appear that this generation has more dyslexia, autism, etc, only that it is now so systematically and aggressively diagnosed.
So I'd like to offer a constructive suggestion: Before I had my kid vaccinated for polio and Hep I called up the Medical Director at Connaught and SB and we went over all the clinical data- risks and contraindications, side effects and AE history. They seemed glad some people were that interested. The risk/reward equation was pretty clear to me after that. Anybody can do the same and generally get a bright, well-educated and well-informed MD on the other side that has a lot more time to talk to you than your friendly HMO's NP or Doc.
So I would caution against throwing out the baby with the bathwater on this one.
