OT re: four letter words.

Expletives are meaningless intensifiers. When we express ourselves in writing on SI, we have the opportunity to edit and polish our self-expression. Most of us strive to do this well, as a gesture of respect for the other members of the thread.

One of my favorite novels as a youth was Melville's Billy Budd. One remarkable feature is that despite the passion, violence and setting on a ship, the entire book contains no expletives. Even though there are no expletives, I doubt anyone who reads the book thinks that it lacks emotional intensity or realism.

The truth is that expletives are poor excuses for sloppy self-expression. Hopefully, they will never gain mainstream acceptance in written expression.
