TEST RESULTS OVERVIEW
Although no single DOCSIS vendor dominated The Tolly Group's testing, each Cable Modem Performance Challenge participant posted results that showcase the strengths of their product, and in some cases, weaknesses.

Toshiba had the fastest batch download and was the only vendor to top the 7- Mbps mark in any test. Impressive. However, Toshiba's victory in the second CMTS configuration scenario (8 interleave) came at a price: a significant performance lag with the primary CMTS setting (32 interleave). Indeed, Toshiba's throughput at 2.525 Mbps at the 32 interleave setting was half that of its nearest competitor. Toshiba did hold its own in the rate-limiting test for FTP/HTTP traffic (at 32 interleave) finishing second behind Nortel.

Nortel posted consistently high marks throughout the tests, winning both the downstream batch transfer test with 5.763 Mbps and the FTP/HTTP test with 3.545 Mbps at the 32 interleave CMTS settings. Nortel also did very well in the upstream batch test, as well as the SAP and Lotus Notes tests.

Com21's upstream performance trounced the field, reaching a high of 2.779 Mbps in the upstream batch test (8 interleave). As a result, Com21 also won the bi-directional batch tests, hitting 4.264 Mbps in (8 interleave). Com21 also did well in the SAP and Lotus Notes tests, which is of interest for businesses and telecommuters.

3Com offered the most consistent performance across all the tests, an impressive achievement given the range of CMTS configurations that were employed. Importantly, 3Com's internal modem performed as well or better than its external modem, proving a DOCSIS PC card can offer high performance at a lower cost than many standalone devices.......
