That survey is a piece of crap. It's comparing 1990 and 1970. The demographic makeup of the work force is dramatically different now due to the women's movement, the inflation in housing prices, etc., many of which were due to the large increase in new households (i.e., boomers) in the late 70's to 80's. Of course, they're going to have higher number of average work hours if more women are moving from stay-at-home mom status to part-time employment and many more to full-time employment.
