But aren't there smaller companies out there that at least could take care of areas that the fiber barons ignore? One that I'm familiar with is the telecom arm of Montana Power with the bizarre name of TouchAmerica. This is a map of their fiber system:

It covers much of the western territory bypassed by the barons. They seem to have built a good business by serving areas that the big names prefer to ignore.

I doubt that a business in Butte, Montana can get nearly the service that an outfit could get in San Francisco or Manhattan, but MPC's business (and I suspect there are several like it) suggests to me fiber is moving toward even those areas where the barons will never venture.

On a vaguely related note, I found an interesting article on rural fiber the other day in searching for something else. This '97 article on a FTTH experiment in rural Minnesota painted a rosy picture of the broadband future for rural customers and businesses:
