Thomas, people can argue about the amount of overstatement due to stock option accounting but the current methods are unacceptable to me. In addition, one important consideration overlooked by some is the generous use of options encourages the use of financial engineering and accounting gimmickery to raise share prices quickly rather than persuing a longer term strategy to create wealth through increasing the productive capacity of a company.
