I'm not saying you're wrong, I am saying your interpretation doesn't go far enough. Those who ask us to trade our freedom for the soup kitchen of the welfare state are architects of a policy of accommodation. He's not talking about the Soviet Union per se, he's talking about statism/socialism/collectivism. I agree that "policy of accommodation" is code for Communism. IMO, he's clearly stating that, no matter how pleasant or seductive it may be to accept government handouts, it leads inexorably to a collective state right here in the United States. That was his genius, that he was brave enough to say that, and lead us to believe that he could do something about it. But either he didn't mean it, or he couldn't do it.
