Wal-Mart Warns need to adjust to a new shipping model as the business
ATLANTA (Oct. 1, 1999) -- The ability of manufacturers to adjust their shipping processes will be crucial to Wal-Mart's ability to broaden its e-commerce product offerings. The retailer, which will relaunch its site within 30-60 days, will greatly broaden the number of products available for sale on-line. Although stockkeeping units offered on the Web will not match in-store offerings, the new site will feature products representing every category except food. Some higher-end products not available in Wal-Mart stores may also be made available for sale on the site, said Hans Holmer, strategy manager, apparel and grocery, supply chain management, Wal-Mart. Holmer, who spoke about Wal-Mart's e-commerce initiative at the Bobbin Americas show here Thursday, said although the retailer will use Fingerhut to fulfill on-line orders, manufacturers will need to adjust to a new shipping model as the business grows. --Jeanette Hye
