I think the traders have themselves psyched out. They plan to sell after earnings because they assume everyone else will too. So when they see it weak before earnings they worry that the top has passed already. I think it's dumb to expect a pattern to repeat itself indefinately.

This pattern has its roots in the past when the insider-selling window reopened after earnings, and the smart money pulled in bids until the window closed. Now any insider selling is not meaningful supply compared to the float.
