Indeed not. The original "freedom from religion" changed to "freedom of religion" only much later. What was it, 60 years or so before the first Christian president?

What a chuckle to have Adams and Jefferson campaigning against each other, each calling the other the atheist. Both were good men (in spite of Clintonian revisionist history) but neither were Christians.

Nevertheless, a central feature of this country's guiding principles has been the freedom to worship how one chooses, or not, without interference from the government. A very healthy notion, and one that we've lived up to very imperfectly.

I cannot help but feel that this topic has been explored at some length. Before wading into such a thread, my general practice has been to read the thread in its entirety. Please forgive me for not doing that in this case -- you've had a lively discussion going here for some time!

If this topic is not comfortable, I'll move along.<g>
