Somebody brought up Genesis Microchip (GNSS) on the thread the other day. Having been in and out of that stock over the last couple years, I thought I'd add my perspective.

First of all, everybody talks about them right now in terms of supplying chips to the flat panel display market, and certainly they're having a lot of success in that area. Their customer list currently includes Acer, Apple, Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM, NEC, Philips, Proview, Samsung, Sony, and Viewsonic. If the FPD market takes off as its projected over the next few years, I think Genesis is well positioned to take advantage of it. Again, I'm postponing any attempts on my part to decide whether widespread FPD adoption would constitute a tornado and make GNSS a gorilla until I have a chance to go back and brush up on the FM. (Anyone else want to take a crack at that?).

What I really think makes Genesis an interesting play, however, is that FPD's aren't their only game. They're also designing chips that would be used in HDTV's. While the company web site doesn't have as impressive a customer list in this area yet, they do include the intriguing statement that "Genesis is not public with many consumer video customers". I take this to mean they have a number of design wins that they aren't announcing yet because the customer has asked them not to.

Put these two markets together, and I think you have a very interesting little company. I can envision a scenario in which the FPD market takes off first and produces profits that can be plowed back into the HDTV chips, giving them a better chance of locking up a big portion of that market as well.

I hope this post will inspire one of the resident thread experts to help me put together a more thorough analysis of this company's GG potential.
