PC MAGAZINE NAMES THE 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPANIES IN THE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY TOP-RANKED MICROSOFT CONTINUES ITS DOMINANCE
NEW YORK, Oct 5, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- PC Magazine, in its 1999 analysis of the technology industry, ranked Microsoft as number one among the "100 Most Influential Companies" for the 3rd consecutive year. For the ratings, which appear in the Oct. 19 issue, editors of America's leading technology magazine considered such factors as revenues, market share, profitability, products performance and subjective assessments.
PC Magazine editors identified that success in this new era will come to those companies that are the most effective at producing the hardware, software and networking infrastructure products and services that get people online at work and at home and enable them to be productive in both environments.
"The huge impact that big Internet firms are having on the technology industry played a large role in the months-long process of developing the list," said Editor-in-Chief Michael J. Miller. "In the end, they were seen both as creators of important sites and products, as well as innovators in the use of technology."
PC Magazine editors found that Microsoft continues to set the agenda for personal computing. The company, which dominates in operating systems and office applications, has been a strong competitor in providing Internet service or Internet content. "Survival of the fittest hinges on a company's ability to adapt to the Internet, not an ability to withstand it," Miller stated.
America Online moved into second place, deposing long-time number two, Intel. AOL was cited for connecting an estimated 18 million households to the Internet and providing up to half of all Internet traffic. Amazon.com, with the influence and a market position to which other online companies aspire, took a big leap into the top 10, jumping to 7th place from last year's 33.
The most auspicious top 100 debuts were eBay at 16, Walt Disney at 24 and Nortel Networks at 32. Excite@Home had the greatest rise in rank to 31 from last year's 97. The greatest fall was Corel's drop to 95 from 27.
Notable trends from this year's PC Magazine Top 100 Companies listing include: -- Of the IPOs on the Top 100 since January 1, 1998, half were Internet companies. -- The number of Internet companies on the Top 100 has almost doubled, from 7 last year to 13 this year.
The 10 top-ranked companies of the PC Magazine 3rd-annual "100 Most Influential Companies" are: 1. Microsoft (1 last year) 2. America Online (8) 3. Intel (2) 4. IBM (3) 5. Cisco Systems (6) 6. Amazon.com (33) 7. Yahoo! (13) 8. Oracle (11) 9. Dell (9) 10. Hewlett-Packard (5)
