Thanks for your excellent post! Generally I agree with everything, except a few things...

As users clamor for broadband, cable just seems so much more user- and technology-friendly than DSL. Not to mention more affordable, in many cases.

Affordable to consumers I think, not to providers. I think cable requires some neighboorhood-wise rewiring and then a housecall for the install, which is really bad. In the end, I think most everyone agrees that wireless will win out so you have to wonder about the expense of laying all this broadband cable, etc.

Also, I don't think the street has clarity wrt the potential of Hypermart and especially the lead that Go2Net enjoys in this sector. I haven't seen it posted on this thread yet, but Excite@Work (just) recently announced their B2B program:


Thanks for the "vortal" term... a new one on me heh. I'm a little worried about the fragmentation in the vertical portal space... this is just like an auction site, there is not much in startup costs and everyone is flooding in.

But anyway hypermart is different from a vertical portal for those that don't know... vertical portals are supposed to be b2b and the most dominant player is verticalnet (so far). Mostly, these are just auction sites for vertical mkt players. Apparently two power plants were auctioned off on vert last month though for 20mm so somebody is using them. But anyway thats not hypermart... hypermart is b2c really, I see hypermart's competition in amzn and ebay for the most part... I guess
