Well, right, pretty much everything inside a Dell computer is made in Asia except the software. Free markets, you know... oh yeah a good thing, except that when Dell wants to build a mfg plant in Japan, hire Japanese workers etc. - in essence the exact same thing that Japan did here with Toyota - Dell is completely locked out.

Now there is an argument that the US has pulled ahead in technology here and the fact that Japan is so closed is actually causing them to regress, I happen to agree with that.

But the original question was how to view Reagan/Bush as stewards of the economy... did business feel that we had a real negotiations powerhouse behind us when Bush went to Japan that time and barfed on the PM... I say no, on international economic issues there was no leadership coming from Reagan/Bush.... none whatsoever.

I agree with Michael that Reagan did good things by breaking the unions, and creating a "business-friendly" climate again in the US. He did a lot of good things but lets not get carried away... thats was the point I was trying to make...
