Most of this is being done at the low level hardware. The disscussions at Telelcosm centered around the fact that they really shouldn't care what you do with the bandwidth, as long as they can control the size of the pipe. This is being built into the cable modem equipment ...

Then, they also are working to ensure that they resolve the right to do anything with the "known" protocols once it hits their network. If they want to use transparent proxy then they will ... this can then be used for further data mining and control ...

They even discussed the plans for "favored" sites. If the destination web site signs a deal with them, they will provide higher performance access and reliability than those who don't sign. So your perception will be molded by the deals that are signed, and the money that is paid. ;-)

The only area that the directory service adds value is in the "group management" functions in this case. Managing a group of cable modems. They are throttling in hardware (or will be) and so the directory itself provides limited value in this particular case.

Or does it? Do you have specific areas that it would really prove valuable? I'm guessing that you don't "roam" and "login" to your cable modem ...

We had several long discussions about object routing and the future of caching and proxies ... it was a blast! ;-) (It is so cool talking to folks who have vision, and actually understand the bigger picture ...)
