I see what you mean about multiple clicks. In StockTalk, though, I would prefer to give the user a choice rather than insist on a pop-up window. The suggestions to right-click to open a new window, or use the arrows adjacent to the "back" button on your browser are good short-cuts. Perhaps the message could have some "intelligence", recognizing where the PM came from and sending the user back to the original message.
