Bombardier Receives 28 Bi-Level Commuter Car Order for Southern California
OCTOBER 5, 1999 MONTREAL, QUEBEC--Bombardier Transportation was awarded a Cdn $69 million (US $ 47 million) order by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA), headquartered in Los Angeles, California, for the manufacture and supply of 28 Metrolink bi-level commuter cars. The 28 coach cars will be manufactured by Bombardier Transportation at its Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Barre, Vermont plants. Deliveries are expected to begin in January 2001 and will be spread over a five-month period. This order represents the exercise of options for several transit agencies included in a contract awarded in June 1998 by the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority of Greater Seattle. Pointing out that Bombardier had already delivered 119 Metrolink units to the SCRRA, the President of Bombardier Transportation - North America, Jacques Lapare said: "We are pleased to have been chosen to supply a new series of our bi-level equipment to this important southern California transportation authority, and thus have the opportunity to strengthen the good business relationship we have already established with SCRRA." Bombardier is also responsible for maintaining the commuter rail fleet of 33 locomotives and the 119 bi-level commuter cars that service the greater Los Angeles area under a 3-year maintenance contract, with two 1-year options, awarded in April 1998. The bi-level commuter cars that Bombardier will be delivering to the SCRRA are designed to accommodate 138 seated and up to 160 standing riders each. They are among the world's largest commuter rail coaches, with an arrangement of two full decks and intermediate end decks which permit higher ceilings and better seating. The low-level platform doors allow full carloads of passengers on or off the coaches within 90 seconds and minimise boarding congestion. Similar vehicles are currently in service at West Coast Express in British Columbia, and Go Transit in Metropolitan Toronto, in the Southern and Northern California regions as well as in southern Florida. Bombardier Transportation, a world leader in the manufacturing of passenger rail cars, offers a full range of urban, suburban and intercity vehicles as well as complete rail transit systems world-wide. It also manufactures freight cars and provides operations and maintenance services. Bombardier Inc. is a Canadian corporation active in the fields of aerospace, rail transportation equipment, recreational products and financial services. It operates plants in 12 countries in North America, Europe and Asia, and more than 90 % of its revenues are generated outside Canada. Bombardier's revenues for its fiscal year ended January 31, 1999 totalled Cdn $11.5 billion. |
