CDPD....

Unless CDPD is tied into the switch and BTS making the voice channel assignment
(which it is NOT), then it MUST be transmitting when the voice channel is assgined.
Thus (if it were a deterministic system) fast enough to drop the CDPD packet when
this is detected, it will still be colliding wiht the first few symbols of the voice call
timing burst.

I conceded this point in my previous mail, but there are ways of addressing it. I would be surprised if the AT&T system boys haven't.

the system gets into deadlock, at which
point the system (CDPD) must decide which channels to block for a long time until
they can service the load.

CDPD is a packet service. It isn't possible for it to block a channel.
The applications best served by a packet service are e-mails and e-commerce, not web browsing, which is better served by a connection oriented service. The load issie is eliminated if the application requirements are matched to the stengths (and limitations) of the underlying service.

Applications using a packet service depend on packets reaching their destination, not how long it takes for the packet to get through.
In the situation you describe, if I sent an e-mail at 4:00PM, it might not reach it's destination until after 6:30PM. That doesn't seem such a big deal for me.
